Public Spaces Community Places
Community Development’s innovative crowdfunding initiative known as Public Spaces, Community Places (PSCP) is a collaborative effort with the MEDC, the Michigan Municipal League, and Patronicity. Local residents can use crowdfunding to be part of the development of strategic projects in their communities, and then be backed with a matching grant from MEDC. From Lansing, to Detroit, to Grand Rapids and up to Marquette and Ironwood —this program is creating those unique, inviting places that are so vital for the attraction and retention talent.
To date, the PSCP has a perfect record with all 11 projects raising funds through an MEDC-backed crowdfunding campaign meeting their goal. MEDC grant dollars have been leveraged six times the amount of private investment creating downtown plazas, community art centers, non-motorized trailheads, public art installations, and many more exciting community places.
The month of March will prove to be a busy one as the program currently has four projects raising funds, and four more expected to go live before April. Our very own Nate Scramlin has been spreading the good word locally about the program at the Michigan Recreation and Park Association conference in Lansing and also the People and Places Conference in Washington D.C.
